Butler Catholic School is pleased to announce the creation of the Andrew Kuehn Memorial Scholarship.
The Andrew Kuehn Memorial Scholarship is available to students in seventh and eighth grade at BCS who show musical promise on the piano or keyboard.
Funding for the scholarship was bequeathed to BCS in Andrew Kuehn’s will. Kuehn, who passed away Feb. 12, was a member of St. Michael Church and All Saints Parish. Besides being a French teacher in Butler Area School District for 49 years, Kuehn was a musician for St. Michael Church and gave private piano and guitar lessons.
In his will, Kuehn left $40,000 to BCS for the formation of a 10-year scholarship fund. This year’s recipient and first-ever winner of the scholarship is eighth grader Tommy Edwards!
BCS Principal John Hazur was excited to make the announcement Sept. 20 during the all-school liturgy, with staff, students, and BCS families present.
“Music has the power to express what words cannot,” Mr. Hazur said. “Tommy Edwards has shown exceptional talent and dedication in bringing melodies to life.”
Per Kuehn’s instructions, the scholarship will be awarded to BCS students in annual increments of $4,000. Tommy’s scholarship will be applied to the 2024-2025 school year.
“We are incredibly proud to recognize him for earning this scholarship on behalf of Andrew Kuehn as a testament to his hard work, passion, and unwavering commitment to excellence,” Mr. Hazur said. “May this achievement be just the beginning of a beautiful musical journey.”
The generosity of Kuehn and donors like him makes Catholic education accessible and a viable option for families in the Butler County region.
