The Butler Catholic School basketball teams have kept the ball rolling this season, making great strides both on and off the court.
“It was another great season!” declared athletic director Travis Weiland.
Student athletes actively participated in both the third- through eighth-grade teams and annual BCS pre-K through second-grade Little Dribblers Basketball Clinic this year. With over 60 students signing up to play for the season and about 50 students taking part in the clinic, the 2022-23 BCS basketball program has had well over 110 student participants!
Developmental Basketball This year, BCS had two developmental teams of third and fourth graders. Though there were a few girls who participated in developmental basketball, both teams—the BCS Black Team and the BCS Gold Team—played in the boys’ division.
“Both teams had a great season,” Weiland explained. “Notably, our BCS Black Team took second place in a tournament hosted at Butler Catholic at the end of February.”
Development teams also participated in a tournament at Sts. Peter and Paul School the weekend of March 11. The fourth grade team took second place.
Girls’ JV and Varsity “Our girls’ JV and varsity basketball teams found themselves in a very competitive section this year,” Weiland said.
Facing Section A teams during the season, both JV and varsity teams learned how adjust their perspective to focus on teamwork in order to face the competition. Being supportive of teammates and staying positive carried them through the season.
“What impressed me most about both teams is that they never gave up,” Weiland added, “even when they were playing much larger schools.”
The BCS JV girls’ team made it to the second round of playoffs this year, falling to the Pittsburgh Diocesan JV Champion team from Mother of Mercy Academy.
The BCS varsity girls’ team also made it to Round 2 of playoffs before losing to Holy Cross Academy, which also won this year’s Pittsburgh Dioceses Varsity Championship.
Boys’ JV and Varsity The BCS JV boys made it through playoffs this year to fight for the Class B championship title March 13! Competing against the JFK Comets, the game took place at Ave Maria Academy.
The BCS varsity boys’ team ended its season March 4 after taking a loss in the second round of playoffs. However, their run included an exciting game in overtime to the St. Gregory Wolves in Round 1 of playoffs. As a team of eight BCS seniors, the varsity team played its hardest to finish the season strong.
“It was an exciting season, with all teams making it to the second round of the playoffs!” Weiland concluded.
