Butler Catholic School is one month into the 2024-2025 school year, and our students are learning lots of valuable skills in class!
Recently, third-grade students in Mrs. Baptiste and Mrs. Stoops’ classes spent time in our environmental classroom learning about tomatoes!
Rae Harrison, a certified Master Gardener and director of environmental education programming at BCS, introduced students to various tomato varieties and discussed the many ways certain types of tomatoes are used. Ms. Rae also picked examples from the school garden to show students how different tomatoes can look when they’re growing and being harvested.
Teaching students how to grow and use food in every-day meals is an important aspect of our environmental program. Tomatoes and other produce grown in the school garden are routinely incorporated into lunches prepared in the BCS cafeteria.
By including students in the gardening process—from planning to planting to harvesting—we’re able to give them hands-on, real-world skills and knowledge that will serve them for years to come!
