The harvest season is an important time at Butler Catholic School, thanks to our beautiful garden and active students and staff. In recent weeks, we’ve had lots of exciting activities involving pumpkins. Take a look!
Homemade Pumpkin Butter
On Oct. 18, students across all grade levels took turns helping Rae Harrison, director of environmental programming, and Eric Homa, director of maintenance, boil down pumpkin puree in a huge cauldron set up in the faculty parking lot!
The puree was made from scratch using the school cafeteria facilities. Ms. Rae roasted 47 sugar pumpkins and got them soft enough for our fifth graders to peel and gut by hand. Once they were done, the pumpkin flesh was pureed and the puree was dumped into the cauldron to be stirred constantly over a fire.
"Before we're done, we will add sugar,” Ms. Rae explained to students as they stopped by to help churn. “We will also add pumpkin pie spice, and probably some vanilla.”
After all their hard work, students were able to sample the pumpkin butter at school. What a delicious lesson on growing, harvesting, and preparing food!
Pink Pumpkins
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and members of the BCS fourth grade Garden Club recently painted some of our pumpkins pink to help the community show support!
Each pink pumpkin was on sale for $10 in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, with proceeds going to the Butler Health System Women’s Imaging Center.
The community was invited to purchase a pink pumpkin, which they could later pick up at school. We also accepted special requests to have purchased pumpkins delivered by members of our Student Council directly to the Women’s Imaging Center to be shared with patients!
We are so blessed to be part of a community that joins forces to show support for those facing difficult circumstances. Thank you to everyone involved with the pink pumpkin sale, especially our generous students!
