The feast of St. Valentine is a wonderful day of celebration at Butler Catholic School! Students share special notes, treats, and activities with their classmates as they look for ways to express their appreciation for each other.
For students in Rosemary Watson’s second grade class, the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day have been filled with excitement! Each year, Mrs. Watson’s class participates in a national Valentines Exchange event. This year, over 1,200 classrooms around the country are participating in the project by sending special letters to each other.
“Each day, the children are excited to open a new valentine letter!” Mrs. Watson said. “They are eager to learn about new places in the country.”
Students at BCS spent time creating special mailings and writing notes to send to other schools. In total, Mrs. Watson said the class sent 23 letters to schools from Ohio to California. So far, her class has received 12 valentines in return.
The valentines are sent directly to BCS, care of Mrs. Watson. As soon as she receives a letter, she opens and reads it to her class. After, she posts the letter on the chalkboard next to a map of the country to show where it came from.
So far, one of the students’ favorite notes has come from Kansas City, Missouri.
“The kids were super excited because it talked about…living very close to the (Kansas City Chiefs) stadium,” Mrs. Watson explained. “Kansas City was in the Super Bowl.”
By being part of the Valentines Exchange, Mrs. Watson’s students don’t just get to learn about life in other schools around the country. They also get to share their stories about going to school and learning with their friends!
