One of the gifts of going to school at Butler Catholic is having the chance to spend time in the BCS Garden. Thanks to a recent run of warm weather, students and faculty have been able to get outside and explore!
Students have been busy keeping the garden productive and efficient, helping with everything from feeding the school chickens, to planting beds, to helping with the installation of our brand new geodesic dome!
The dome is part of on-going expansions to the school garden as we seek to make it accessible and workable all year long. Acting as a greenhouse, the structure provides students with the ability to plant sooner and harvest later throughout the year.
“Our students love to garden!” added Kathy Dudley, who helps lead Garden Club at BCS. “They have embraced our ever-expanding school garden with so much enthusiasm and dedication.”
Though all students and staff are welcome to assist in the use of the garden, students in the BCS Garden Club have additional opportunities to work with plants.
This month, fourth graders sowed peppers and tomatoes for the Butler Community Partnership gardens. Fifth and sixth graders also planted seeds for lettuce, carrots, beans, cucumbers, and zucchini in the new geodesic dome.
As we continue finishing up the dome installation and planning new ways to help our garden grow, we’re reminded each day what a blessing it is to have access to and learn about nature in the heart of Butler City.
