It’s almost harvest time, and BCS students are learning all about preparing food for the winter!
During a recent school-wide event led by director of environmental education Rae Harrison, students and staff helped peel, cut, cook, and churn locally harvested apples for homemade apple butter!
The project allowed students to experience and participate in the food preparation process, giving them an appreciation for all the hard work that goes into preparing seasonal specialties.
Second graders in Mrs. Watson’s class also participated in their own special apple project in celebration of Johnny Appleseed’s birthday Sept. 26! Using produce donated by Ms. Rae, students peeled and cooked apples in a crockpot in their classroom. After adding sugar, cinnamon, and water to simmer all day, students got to taste their hard work.
“The kids said it was better than store-bought!” Mrs. Watson added.
