Butler Catholic School is honored to be the home of several authors—including this year’s fourth grade students!
Each year, students in Kate Jordan and Elizabeth Baptiste’s fourth grade classes participate in a special spring creative writing course. The course includes studying stories and how they’re crafted to capture the reader’s imagination while driving home life-long lessons.
Per tradition, the creative writing project culminates with students writing their own short fables to include in a hard bound class anthology. The stories have a special lesson or moral, which students learn about during the creative writing process.
“After learning about fables, each individual in fourth grade wrote their own story to include in a class book,” Mrs. Jordan explained.
The creative writing assignment includes both hands-on learning and practical application of writing styles and storytelling.
By having their stories—complete with their own original artwork—published side-by-side, students also had the opportunity to see how different writers can collaborate on projects. Their hard work paid off March 21 when students received the final copies of their books.
“We were excited to unbox our books,” Mrs. Jordan recalled, “and celebrate with an author signing!”
The fourth grade students made their author appearances at school, signing each other’s books to achieve the full author experience.
