This year at Butler Catholic School, we’ve made an effort to bring back special speaker visits and field trips! These provide students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom setting, giving them real-life experiences with memorable lessons and opportunities.
Here are just a couple of the exciting adventures students at BCS are having!
Meteorologist visits BCS May 5th was forecasted to be an exciting day at BCS, thanks to a special visit from KDKA-TV meteorologist Falicia Woody.
Ms. Woody, who joined the KDKA First Alert Weather Team last year, did a special presentation in the BCS auditorium about severe weather. She also explained what being a meteorologist means, talking to students in kindergarten through fifth grade about what her team at KDKA does to predict and forecast the weather.
Following Ms. Woody’s presentation, students spent the day participating in weather-related projects! For instance, Mrs. Cosme’s third grade class created rain clouds in canning jars. Students also raced to take part in a digital severe weather escape room, learning about different types of severe weather and storm chasing.
A dollop of history Once again getting back into the swing of field trips, our fifth grade students visited the Heinz History Center in April!
Traveling to Pittsburgh with their parent chaperones and teachers, fifth graders used the opportunity to learn about the greater Pittsburgh region. Seeing first-hand the impact inventions have had on Western Pennsylvania helped them understand more about their local communities, providing them with a snapshot of a past that’s drenched in innovations, hard work, and—of course—Heinz Ketchup!
Other adventures April and May are busy months for students, especially at BCS.
In April, students in seventh and eighth grade took a sobering trip to the Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset. Students learned about the 9/11 terrorist attacks and how those attacks effected the world. The trip served as a reminder of the sacrifices Americans have made—and continue to make—for each other.
In May, students in sixth through eighth grades participated in a special educational day at Kennywood park in West Mifflin. The trip combined fun with physics, allowing students to see how classroom knowledge can be applied to real-life scenarios!
The school year might be winding down, but our staff and teachers still have lots of exciting things planned for students! We’re excited to share their adventures in the coming weeks of school.
