Students and staff at Butler Catholic School have been celebrating academics and faith in all sorts of ways this month!
The 2022-23 Forensics season ended March 11, with the Finals and All-Stars tournament being hosted at BCS. Forensics provides students with important skills and experiences as public speakers in six categories: poetry, prose, declamation, drama, impromptu, and multiple reading (or group reading).
At BCS, students in grades 5 through 8 can participate as individuals on our Forensics team. Those students had the opportunity to compete against academic athletes from other participating schools in the Pittsburgh Diocese on March 11 to determine this year’s over-all school ranking. BCS claimed fourth place for the season, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our students!
Parent and student volunteers stayed after school March 13 to help with a special spring Crafternoon! Hosted by Steele’s Brushes and Ceramics of Butler, the afternoon event gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their artistic side.
Choosing from several Easter designs, students learned proper painting techniques for ceramics before taking home their projects to share with friends and family.
March 14 marked the annual Pi Day, a time when students and teachers across the country celebrate the mathematical constant π.
At BCS, students in Carol Dorcy’s math classes this year learned about Pi’s first three significant figures—3.14—as well as fun facts about mathematics.
“We solved various problems finding the area or circumference of a circle,” Mrs. Dorcy explained. “All of the problems were connected together into a banner.”
That banner was displayed outside of Mrs. Dorcy’s classroom so others could learn about the numbers of Pi, too! The celebration wasn’t complete until students shared a triple chocolate brownie pie, decorated with a frosting version of Pi.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day March 17, students in kindergarten learned about rainbows and wrote short notes answering the question, “Who is worth more to you than gold?” They also made and wore special hats to show the rest of the school their St. Patrick’s Day spirit!
The 2022-23 school year might be winding down in a few months, but every day provides students the opportunity to learn something new at school. Visit the BCS Facebook page to learn more about student activities and accomplishments!
