With Halloween just around the corner, it’s a spook-tacular time for exciting lessons in the classroom! Second grade students in Shauna Hohn’s class at Butler Catholic School recently had some frightful fun practicing their math skills by designing special haunted houses!
“We have been working on fact families and story problems,” Mrs. Hohn explained. “This allowed us to review what we have been learning in a fun and engaging way!”
Employing their reading, writing, and math skills, students developed their own spooky word problems. Then, they transferred their word problems onto haunted houses they designed themselves. This was a great way for them to break down their problems piece-by-piece in order to see them from different sides and find solutions.
Though this is the first time Mrs. Hohn implemented this project, she’s already planning to make it part of her yearly curriculum.
“This was the perfect thing to work on during Halloween!” she explained.
The houses are currently displayed in the second-grade hallway for everyone in school to enjoy.
